Watch: Spellwork by Austra

Ritual and witchcraft in the forest.

The video for ‘Spellwork’ by Austra, which appeared on last year’s widely-acclaimed album Feel It Break, is super dreamy. Directed by Yelena Yemchuk (who was behind Smashing Pumpkins’ ‘Zero’ and ‘Thirty-Three’), the video takes a forest as its setting and is a harmonious visual accompaniment to Austra aka Katie Stelmanis’ dark and dreamy synth pop track. There’s a Crucible kind of vibe as two opposing elements of religion and the occult are at play in the video as Puritan-style dress is contrasted with allusions to ritual and witchcraft (as the name of the song would suggest). Other things to look out for: pretty girls feeding each other fruit, an unexpected blow job and pastel-coloured smoke.

Austra will be touring Australia and New Zealand with Laneway Festival this January/February, as well as playing sideshows in both Melbourne and Sydney.
