Surface to Air x Kim Gordon

The Sonic Youth bass player designs for French label, Surface to Air.

Sonic Youth's iconic bassist, Kim Gordon, makes another foray into the world of womenswear with her latest collection for French label, Surface To Air. The 12-piece collection features splashes of neon-tangerine - which Gordon describes as "a good, bright colour to wear on stage" - soft leather and tees printed with the rocker's own illustrations. There are also snakeskin boots in the shoe department, though Gordon says her personal favourite is the "silk tank dress with a digital shattered-glass print." It is "open with slits down the sides" and is reminiscent of the rebellious 'killer cool' attitude of Gordon's nineties fashion label, X-Girl, modelled by a young Sofia Coppola and Chloe Sevigny.

Gordon's most recent collab was her 2009 Mirror/Dash collection, inspired by Françoise Hardy exclusively for Urban Outfitters. This latest collection maintains that cool urban aesthetic but with a focus on mix-and-match basics that can be stuffed into the overhead compartment of a tour bus and paired well together. “You can’t pack that much for the road, and I’ve always liked the idea of not dressing up for a performance,” she says.

The collaboration began when the guys from Surface to Air saw Gordon wearing a pair of their boots during one of her shows. Asked how he feels about working with the Sonic Youther, the brand's founder and CEO, Jérémie Rozan says simply, "Lucky."

The collection is not quite the skate-inspired rebellion of Gordon's X-Girl days but there is still a certain rebellious edge to the collection, as well as a touch of French femininity that reflects the francophile in Kim Gordon. “I’m a sucker for French culture,” she says.

Surface to Air x Kim Gordon is the rocker's most stylistically mature collection, drawing from many influences. “I like balancing things," Gordon says. "I’m a mom, too, you know, but I don’t always want to look just like that. “It’s the idea of finding things that work and are comfortable, but in which you can still feel like you have an identity.”

Surface to Air x Kim Gordon will be available this month in all three Surface to Air stores (Paris, New York, São Paulo), as well as select retailers worldwide.
