Ultimate Road-Trip Playlist III

What Midnight Juggernaughts will be listening to on their way to the summer festivals.
Midnight Juggernauts L-R: Andrew Szekeres, Vincent Vendetta and Daniel Stricker.

We asked drummer Daniel Stricker of Melbourne's Midnight Juggernauts what his ultimate road-trip playlist would look like. Here's what he'll be listening to in the car on the way to all the summer festivals. What follows is a mix of boundary-pushing electronica, some minimalism, exotica and old school groove. An eclectic mix to keep you on your toes.

1.         Neu! – ‘Negativland’

Despite their limited commercial success at the time, seventies German band Neu! are now considered some of the pivotal pioneers of the electronic music scene in Germany. Their influence crops up everywhere from Bowie to Brian Eno, Iggy Pop and Joy Division. This song, 'Negativland' actually inspired its very own namesake band, which formed in San Francisco during the late seventies. It is first on the ultimate Juggernauts road-trip playlist.

2.         Japan – ‘Ghosts’

While a song lacking drums seems like an odd choice for a drummer, 'Ghosts' is an eighties classic from British band, Japan. The minimalist track reached number five on the UK Singles Chart back in its hey-day.

3.         Kirin J Callinan – ‘WIIW’

Formerly of Sydney band Mercy Arms Kirin J Callinan's sound is haunting and his performances confronting. The only young artist listed in the Juggernauts road-trip playlist, Callanan is known for pushing the boundaries and he takes experimental electronica to a new level.

4.         Martin Denny – ‘Quiet Village’

Sampling various bird calls, Martin Denny's 'Quiet Village' is the epitome of Denny's unique blend of exotica and lounge music. The American piano-player is the father of exotica and is known for his celebration of Tiki culture in his music. 'Quiet Village' is no exception.

5.         Claudja Barry – ‘Love For The Sake Of Love’

Jamaican-born Disco Queen, Caudja Barry was briefly part of Boney M but her short stint with the band ended due to creative differences (Barry was averse to lip-syncing). Her boogie classic 'Love For The Sake of Love' will keep your spirits up for the final road-trip stretch.
