EMA is Erika M. Anderson and she is a pretty rad singer/songwriter from South Dakota, formerly of drone band Gowns. These days, Erika plays solo under the acronym EMA, which has been named "New Band of the Day" by The Guardian newspaper and "Artist to Watch" by Rolling Stone Magazine. This year, EMA will be paying us a visit down under for Laneway Festival 2012.
Over the phone, Erika shared with us her playlist-of-the-moment, which is nothing short of an eclectic melting pot of genres and styles:
"I'm really excited by all different sorts of music. When something is done well, it doesn't matter what genre it is."
"What I've been digging recently" by EMA
"The Violent Femmes"
An all-time classic: 'Blister in the Sun'

"Death Grips' Ex Military"
Rather than post the whole album, here is a taste... the track's called 'Culture Shock'.

"Abner Jay"
A Blues classic, 'St. James Infirmary Blues' — as performed by eccentric multi-instrumentalist Abner Jay.
"Bulgarian womens' choirs"
"I've been trying to dig up some Bulgarian womens' choir stuff lately because they do some really amazing things with their voices."
"The new Britney Spears record" (aka 'Criminal')
"That song's pretty sweet."
